WELCOME TO OUR AUGUST E-NEWSLETTER
Dear *|FNAME|*,

Welcome to our Term 3 newsletter! In this newsletter, you'll find the latest evidence-based resources to help teachers, educators and health professionals talk to young people about drugs and alcohol.

E-cigarette use and vaping among young people continue to present challenges for schools. Below you'll find information on our upcoming webinar which looks at emerging research into young people's views and habits around vaping, as well as a recent feature podcast episode highlighting how Positive Choices resources can help schools tackle this issue.

Also, a friendly reminder that this Saturday 12th August is
International Youth Day, which recognises the right of every young person to live a safe, happy and healthy life! Teachers and health professionals play an important role in helping protect young people from physical and psychological harms, including those related to alcohol and other drug use.

With young people spending more waking hours at school than at home with their parents, teachers are well placed to correct common misperceptions that students have about alcohol and other drugs. Visit the Positive Choices website below for useful tips on how to do this:

RESOURCES FOR ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER COMMUNITIES
Strong & Deadly Futures is the first culturally-inclusive, drug prevention program for schools that was co-developed with, and for, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Aboriginal students.
Their Year 8 program was successfully implemented in 11 schools across NSW, WA, and QLD in 2022. In the coming weeks, they will be launching their Year 9 Booster Lessons! For more information, click here.
IN THE KNOW
The short-term effectiveness of school-based drug prevention programs has been well established. However, new research has revealed their positive effects can last up to 7 years after such programs are delivered. Our new blog post explores this further.
An Australian study looking at e-cigarette use among Year 12 high school students found that 74% reported they had never used an e-cigarette or vaped, while those who reported engaging in risky drinking and cigarette smoking were most likely to also use e-cigarettes. Read more here.
