RESOURCES FOR PARENTS AND FAMILIES

Why do young people use drugs and alcohol?

Knowing the pressures that young people face can give parents an understanding of the reasons young people may use drugs and alcohol, which can help them to respond in a constructive way. This factsheet covers those common reasons and how to address them.

ADF Vaping Factsheet

Vaping is a hot topic right now, with a lot being said about its effects + potential harms for young people. Yet, there’s lots of conflicting and confusing information out there. Check out the Alcohol and Drug Foundation's latest factsheet here to clear the air on vaping.

IN THE KNOW
The National Health and Medical Research Council released their 2022 CEO Statement on e-cigarettes based on in-depth evidence reviews and an extensive toxicology report. It suggests that the vapour from e-cigarettes can be harmful, and found limited evidence they are effective at helping smokers quit. Read the full statement here.
An Australian paper which looked at emerging trends in recreational inhalation of nitrous oxide (N2O) or 'nanging' found that since 2017, social media posts & Internet searches for N2O have increased rapidly, with searches mostly focused on obtaining N2O canisters. Read more here.
The types of recreational venues that late adolescents aged 17-18 attend can influence their risk of using different drugs, according to a US paper published in Substance Abuse. The study found that those who attended raves & dance parties were at higher risk of using ecstasy. Read more here.
