Summary

Presented by Associate Professor Louise Mewton, Julia Riches and Georgette Borel, this webinar is for secondary school teaching and support staff interested in learning more about supporting students with FASD.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is estimated to affect between 2% to 5% of the general population. There is likely a child in every Australian school with FASD. The webinar will cover:

  1. What is FASD and how does it affect learning and behaviour?
  2. The development of new evidence-based resources on FASD for secondary school teaching and support staff.
  3. Strategies for supporting young people with FASD in the school environment.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A session.

About the speakers

Dr Louise Mewton is an Associate Professor and public health researcher with a focus on the epidemiology, assessment, prevention, and treatment of alcohol use and related disorders across the lifespan. She is Program Lead in Lifespan and Brain Health Research at the Matilda Centre, University of Sydney and the Project Manager of Learning with FASD.

Julia Riches is a Research Officer at the Matilda Centre, University of Sydney. She has been the Project Coordinator of Learning with FASD since the project commenced in 2020.

Georgette Borel is a Research Assistant at the Matilda Centre, University of Sydney who has been working on Learning with FASD since 2024.
